O'Grady lived in Wheaton, Illinois, and graduated from the North High School of Wheaton in the year 1981. She is the child of Jan O'Grady (a finance planner) and Jim O'Grady. Her family raised her by their grandparents in Wheaton in Illinois and graduated in 1981 with a degree from Wheaton-North High School. The model was featured on several commercials for television before moving into Los Angeles. O'Grady's early career was as a Montgomery Ward model, where she also made several commercials. She played a role in the 1988 romantic comedic film She's Having a Baby. She was later a regular in ABC comedy China Beach with Dana Delany.
